I never really put much thought into a ruler (the measuring type). Anyway, I needed a small ruler for my bullet journal and as I was shopping for the perfect one, it triggered this memory (btw, I broke in that new ruler with this bullet journal).
In second grade I was introduced to the basics of fractions. It was difficult. The teacher taught fractions by giving each student a ruler and pointing out what each line on the ruler meant 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and so on.
I was absolutely confused with how a line on a ruler was 1/4 or 1/16 of an inch, after all what was an inch? Heck, what was a fraction?
My feelings of embarrassment stopped me from asking any questions. So I didn’t. I was defeated.
As I explained my struggle to my mom, she put a frozen pizza into the oven.
Before she cut the pizza, she explained how a whole pizza can be divided into parts. As she cut the pizza in half, I learned what 1/2 meant. Two more cuts created 1/4, 2 more cuts equaled an eighth, etc.
She used the pizza as a teaching device and I understood. Completely. On that day I learned fractions – and that pizza solves everything.
Just an FYI, I love the stamps The Sassy Club sent me, not only are they super cute, the stamps are sturdy, and stick very well to an acrylic block. The days of the week stamp is here, the month/date stamps are here, and the ideas stamp is here.
