Last week, I had the opportunity to work with a woodburning tool by Walnut Hollow. Can I just say how fun that was? I was intimidated by this tool at first, but it’s so easy to use. It’s like writing with a pen, really! I want to burn more designs onto wood, maybe even some leather! Also, I added a bit of a spin to the project and colored in the design with Tombow colored pencils.

Tips
As a first time wood burner, here are some tips I learned along the way. I’ll continue adding to this list as time progresses.
• First, freehand (or stencil) the design with a pencil. The woodburning tool will burn off the pencil markings.
• For a darker burn, I turned the tool to a medium/high setting. Once heated, the metal will turn a darker orange color (do not touch the metal, it is extremely hot). When hot enough, the tool will burn the wood with ease.
• Hold the tool like a big marker and simply draw right over the penciled design.
• Practice on a “scratch piece of wood” or the back side of the project.
• To add some color to the wood burn design, I used colored pencils.
• Use pliers to remove the hot tips. The woodburning tool gets up to 950° Fahrenheit, so don’t touch any part of the tool with barehands.
This tool is so addicting!! I’m already on the hunt for more surfaces to burn.
