It’s the beginning of September and it’s still summer.
As a kid I loved summer. Three months off of school, sleeping in, and swimming all day everyday, it doesn’t get much better than that.
As an adult with responsibilities, summer isn’t nearly as enjoyable. Now I just see it as a season full of heat.
Fall (Autumn for some) is just around the corner and I am counting down the days, 20 to be exact. This will be our first season change here in Texas. I’ve lived all of my falls in Southern California, which is to say fall didn’t really happen. Supposedly, Texas experiences the fall foliage and more importantly cooler temperatures. Which means, I just might need to trade in my California sweaters for some puffy downs jackets.
With the transition from summer to fall, it’s time to retire those fun bright summer layouts to something more fall-ish. I plan to incorporate fall colors in every layout I create. That means, darker shades of reds, oranges and greens, and of course browns. I foresee pinecones, acorns, burlap textures, leaves, and wreaths in future spreads.
My September cover page was a wreath and that turned out better than I expected. See the making of that cover here. To continue with the fall theme, this month’s calendar just screams “bring on the fall”. Check it out.

Step One
For this layout I wanted various shades of browns so I went for an ombré effect. I created a bunch of squares in my notebook with my stencil and several shades of brown brush pens, using a lighter shade of brown for each row.
Step Two
Then I added the dates to each box with a brown fine tip marker. And I lettered the month with a light-colored brown brush pen. The month looked a bit too dull for me, so I decided to add more color to it. To do this I laid out a piece of washi tape to the notebook and colored the bottom of the month with a darker shade of brown. To really make the month pop I added a bit of design with a white gel pen.
Step Three
For the days of the week, I decided to use my favorite alphabet stamps; and to continue the brown theme, I used brown distress ink.
Step Four
Last, I grabbed my acrylic block and leaf stamp from this fall themed stamp set by The Sassy Club, and stamped the leaves all over the layout. Instead of using stamp ink, I colored in the leaf with several brush pens from step one.
