Back when I was in high school I took all the ceramics classes the school had to offer. I learned how to build with clay but I especially loved to throw (creating on the wheel).
My favorite creations were vases, bowls, cups, and plates. Come to think of it, I haven’t created or touched clay since high school…until now.
I was really tired of getting inks and paints all over my desk, so I decided to make a pen/paint brush rest. This DIY is simple and takes about 5 minutes to make.
I’m not using the same type of clay from high school but rather polymer clay, the kind that bakes in the oven rather than a kiln.
These rests are way easy to make, the clay is affordable – about $1.25 with a coupon, and there are so many colors to choose from.
I combined several colors and different brands together to make this rest. Check it out.
Supplies
- Polymer Clay (various brands)
- Baby Oil (optional)
Step One
With my fingers, I removed a dime sized piece of clay from the dark purple, white, and green package.
Step Two
Then, in the palm of my hands, I rolled the purple color into a ball and the teal color into the shape of a worm. If the clay is a bit hard, add a small amount of baby oil to soften it.
Step Three
Next, I wrapped the teal worm around the purple ball, creating a combination of both colors into one ball.
Step Four
From here, I grabbed small bits of the white clay and placed them in random spots on the ball. Roll the ball until it’s smooth.
Step Five
Last, I flattened the center of the ball with my pointer finger while keeping a lip on both sides (this keeps the brush or pen from rolling). Now it’s time to cure or cook the clay. Be sure to follow the directions on the package. I cooked mine for 30 mins at 400 degrees. BTW, store the leftover clay in an airtight zip sandwich bag or container.
