First things first. The shaker portion I make is totally DIY. With that said, it differs from the shakers that come in kits. But it works nearly the same.
Second things second, this shaker tutorial isn’t just for a shaker tag, it can be used as a card too.
Supplies
- Decorative Paper/Cardstock
- Tree and Tag Die Cut
- Die Cut Machine
- Hot Glue
- Sequins, Glitter, Beads, etc.
- Red Trim
- Baker’s Twine
- Sheet Protector (similar)
- Washi Tape
- Snow Pen
- Heat Gun (similar)
Step One
I made this shaker card to look identical on both sides. First, I made two tags with my die cut. Then I lined up the two gift tags one right on top of the other. Be sure the pretty sides of the tags are facing outward (that way they will line up and be symmetrical). Then I placed a tree die right in the center, secured it with removable tape so it doesn’t move, and ran that thru the die cut machine. Set aside.
Step Two
Now let’s make the shaker portion. Grab a sheet protector.
Here I am eyeballing the size of the Christmas tree and marking the sheet protector. Be sure the page protector covers the entire length and width of the tree. Rather than trim the page protector to the shape of the tree, I find it easiest to shape the page protector to a square or rectangle. With scissors cut the page protector to the marked size. Sidenote: I prefer using the bottom corner of the page protector because it takes less effort to complete the shaker (I can be a lazy crafter sometimes).
Step Three
With the trimmed sheet protector in hand, two of the sides are open and two sides are secure. Place a thin strip of washi tape to the open side edge of the sheet protector. Then fold it over to the other side to secure it closed.
Step Four
Now that only one opening remains, fill the sheet protector “pocket” with glitter, sequins, confetti, etc. Don’t add too much as the contents need room to shake.
Secure the top of the pocket with washi tape using the same method from step 2. Be sure there aren’t any small openings so the glitter, sequins etc don’t come out.
Step Five
This step is completely optional.
Add some snow to the bottom of the tree tag. I’m using an embossing snow pen.
Next, I used my heat gun to make it puffy giving the effect of snow.
Step Six
Grab one of the tree tags and some washi tape. Line up the shaker to the backside of the tag and secure it down with washi tape.
Step Seven
Grab the other tag and line it up with the shaker tag (use a binder clip to hold it in place if needed).
Next, working in small sections, add hot glue to the tag. Avoid getting glue on the sheet protector shaker as the heat can cause it to melt.
