For some reason, eyeballs are playing a big role in my Halloween schematic. It’s probably because they are simple to draw and it just adds to the Halloween vibe!
As I continue with the Halloween layouts (see my previous ones 1, 2, 3), I decided to concentrate entirely on an eyeball theme.
The other important part I need to mention is this, this layout is perfect for anyone with limited craft supplies. I’m not using any stamps or stencils in this post.
Continue reading and I’ll share alternative methods to creating this layout.
Supplies
- Notebook
- Distress Ink (3, 15)
- Circle Stencil
- Ink Application Tool
- Removable Adhesive
- Colored Brush Pens (Brights and Primary)
- TwinTone Markers (Pastels and Brights)
- White Gel Pen
- Black Drawing Pen
- Fude Brush Pen Twin
Step One
I started this layout by placing several pieces of cardstock in areas I wanted to block from being colored on. I put removable adhesive (washi tape works too) on the back of the cardstock so they wouldn’t move during the coloring process. Be sure the tape is removable as permanent adhesive may rip the journal paper when removed.
Step Two
Next, with my Ink Application Tool I applied a light layer of black Distress Ink all around the notebook followed by a layer of purple Distress Ink. No Distress Inks? Here’s a simple alternative. Use colored pencils or crayons for a similar look. Color with a light layer of black followed by a layer of purple. Or avoid the inks and coloring all together and just outline the boxes.
Step Three
Now it’s time to create all the eyeballs. For this layout I am using a graduated circle stencil to create the eyes. I start off by drawing the largest circle with a black drawing pen. Then I drew a smaller circle for the color portion of the eye, followed by an even smaller circle for the iris. When creating a bunch of eyes, overlap the circles. Doing so gives the eyes dimension. Afterward, I colored the eyes (blues, bright green, and orange) and added a highlight to the eyes with a white gel pen. To complete the Halloween look, I added thin wavy red lines all around the largest circle.
For those without a circle stencil, look around the house for small round objects that will make drawing the circles easy. Look in the fridge – mustard, soy sauce, milk, and soda bottles all have circular caps. See what’s in the bathroom cabinets – lotion bottles, shampoo bottles, and travel sized items, many have circular caps.
Step Four
Last, I labeled each of the boxes. I lettered the month in the longest box with a Brush Pen and with the same black pen I used for the eyes I wrote in the days of the week. Interested in learning how to letter? Check out my lettering guide over at Etsy.
