Shaving cream is for shaving right? Right. And wrong!

Who woulda ever thunk shaving cream is such a versatile tool. Not me. That was until I saw various projects using the stuff for more than just shaving. I decided to make some Valentines with shaving cream.

Just add a bit of liquid watercolor right on top of the shaving cream and ta-dah, it turns into a papercrafting medium. This is a kid friendly project too, just be sure to protect the work space and floor area with newspaper.

I’ve done this project once before using darker colors, see how those color mixtures turned out here. Actually, I love this DIY so much I created a 3 minute tutorial over on my YouTube channel. Check it out.

Supplies

Step One

First, I used my diecut machine and heart diecut to make several hearts. The great part with this project is the hearts can be hand drawn and cut. Or forgo the heart and use a different shape altogether.

In terms of paper, I highly suggest using watercolor paper. The paper is thick and durable and once everything is dry, will lay flat again.

Step two

Grab an aluminum pan or a glass baking dish (I’m using an 8×8). Add a decent amount of shaving cream filling the dish about half way up. I’ve only used generic foam shaving cream for this project and not the gel kind. I don’t believe the gel kind will work as it doesn’t foam up the same.

Step Three

Next, I grabbed a few shades of pink and red Art-C and Brea Reese liquid watercolors. I gently squeezed several drops of each color right on top of the shaving cream. No need to saturate the shaving cream with the liquid watercolor but place about 10 drops +/- of each color. With a palette knife or craft stick gently swirl the mix.

Step Four

Dip the watercolor paper into the mix, covering one side. Use the palette knife to remove the paper from the mix and to scrape off the shaving cream. Place the scraped off shaving cream back into the dish. I only covered one side of the heart, but repeat the process for both sides if it’s preferred. The same mix can be used multiple times and another color can be added if wanted. Just add a couple drops, swirl the mix, and dip the paper again. Allow the paper to fully dry before lettering onto the heart or decorating the heart in any way.
